We’ve been covering the advancements in PS4 emulation quite a bit over the past few weeks, as newcomer ShadPS4 is starting to make impressive leaps forward by running some of the huge games in the PlayStation 4’s 3D library.
Basic PS4 emulation has been around for years now, but it was limited to 2D and homebrew games – fine for shooter fans, but for anyone wanting to boot up Bloodborne, it’s been nothing more than a pipe dream until now.
But excitement has been building in recent weeks. First, Bloodborne at least started loading, then progressed and progressed, and the opening cutscenes from the old PS4 game and the remake mostly started working. But now, with this latest update, it’s reported that Bloodborne’s opening video now plays at 30fps without any issues. Granted, it’s not the game itself, but these features don’t work right away.
The pace of development has been incredible in such a short space of time, and while there’s still a considerable way to go before we see a fully playable emulated version of From Software’s classic, progress is being made quickly.
of The latest version of ShadPS4Version 0.2.1 is now available for download, and a version for Mac has also appeared.
As the emulator grows in popularity, more and more people volunteer to lend their expertise to the project, which continues to speed up further. At this stage, ShadPS4 is more of a rolling stone with no interest in picking up the moss.
The page for the currently downloadable version states, “The fifth release of Shadps4. Runs many commercial games and also has some playable games.”
At this stage there’s no point in downloading an emulator unless you really want to track its progress, but the fact that this is becoming possible is surprising given where things were earlier this year.
With work progressing rapidly, it will be interesting to see how far the development team is by the end of 2024.
