Recipe Ingredients
- Ground beef – Lean, perfectly cooked, easy-to-shred ground beef is perfect for a savory Sloppy Joe.
- vegetables – Onions, peppers and garlic add color, flavor and texture to the mix.
- seasoning – Add ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, white pepper, and paprika for extra flavor. Creole seasoningand beef soup.
- cheese – Provolone is the classic cheese for Sloppy Joes, but you can also use shredded provolone, mozzarella, or a combination of both.
- bread – Brioche hamburger buns are my favorite, but any bun or roll will do.

- heat Heat a large skillet or cast iron pan over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until browned. (Photo 1)
- drain – Remove the meat from the pan and discard any excess fat. Use your judgement on how much fat to discard, especially if you use regular ground beef. (Photo 2)
- Sauté – Add butter, onion, garlic, pepper and spring onion and sauté for 1-2 minutes. (Photo 3)
- sauce – Return the ground meat to the pan and add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, white pepper, paprika, Creole seasoningHeat for about 2 minutes. (Photo 4)
- slurry – Combine beef stock and cornstarch in a small cup and add to beef mixture. Simmer 4-5 minutes or until liquid is slightly reduced. Season with salt and pepper. (Photo 5)
- serve – Finally, turn off the heat, add the provolone cheese and serve on toasted rolls or brioche buns. (Photo 6)
Recipe Variations
- Make it into a taco, using corn tortillas instead of buns is delicious too. Taco seasoning instead of Creole seasoning I arranged it in a Mexican style.
- Try pouring the Sloppy Joe mix over potatoes. Put a spoonful on top of a baked potato for a delicious stuffed baked potato. 😋
- Use a different ground meat. This isn’t a cheesesteak recipe anymore, but I won’t say that. Try this recipe with ground chicken, ground turkey, or ground lamb.
Tips and Tricks
- Use a large frying pan to brown the beef – it will cook better if it’s not too crowded.
- As you cook the beef until browned, break up any chunks you find. This helps to create a more uniform texture and makes the sandwich a little less “sloppy.” 😅
- The main seasoning in this recipe is Worcestershire sauce, but if you absolutely must substitute, try tamari sauce or soy sauce.
Preliminary steps
You can also make this a day or two ahead of time – just follow the recipe but wait to add the cheese. Allow the mixture to cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It tastes even better the next day.
Add cheese as the dish heats on the stove. Once the Sloppy Joe mix is warm, serve on a toasted bun.
How to serve and store
Enjoy your Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joe hot off the stove with steaming filling on a toasted bun.
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. Do not store the sandwiches assembled, as the buns will become soggy. Instead, store the buns and fillings separately. Reheat sandwich fillings on the stove or in the microwave and serve on freshly toasted buns for a homemade meal.
