What is a charcuterie board?
(shar-KOO-tər-ee) may be difficult to pronounce, but it is easy to pronounce. It comes from the French word meaning cured meat, and can refer to bacon, ham, salami, sausage, etc. The list goes on. Then combine these delicious dishes with a variety of cheeses, crackers, dried fruits, and nuts for the latest and greatest in luxurious appetizers.

The list is simple:
- Attractive wooden board large enough to choose ingredients. Marble or slate slabs, wooden boards (olive wood is beautiful), and large platters all work well.
- Cute little forks and cheese knives allow you to grab what you want without touching your food.
- You can also use ramekins or small bowls for dips and sauces for a prettier presentation.

tips and tricks
- To assemble a charcuterie board, first place your large items on the board. Think big cheese rings, bowls of dips and spreads, and jars of breadsticks.
- Keep it simple. Social media may drive you crazy, but keep in mind your guests’ likes and dislikes. There’s no shame in including cheddar cheese or salami on your tray, as long as it’s something your guests know and love.
- Add lots of colors and textures! I love adding color with bright red apples, green and red grapes, blueberries, red cherry tomatoes, and green and black olives. Raspberries, blackberries, and other fruits are great for creating texture on the board.
- Calculate meat and cheese. I usually allow 2-3 ounces each of meat and cheese per guest. Some people eat more, some eat less, but in the end there is always a balance.
Preparation instructions
I prefer to assemble my charcuterie board as close to serving time as possible. Once you have everything sorted, it only takes a few minutes to prepare.
Of course, you can arrange everything in advance, even the day before. Cut the meat and cheese and store in the refrigerator until it’s time to put everything together. The same goes for fruits and vegetables. You can also wash, cut and store the day before.
Jams, spreads, tapenade, and other condiments that come in jars can be transferred directly from the refrigerator to ramekins.
How to consume and store
The great thing about charcuterie boards is that there’s no right or wrong way to make them. Start by gathering all your materials and then let your imagination and creativity run wild.
Storing leftovers is easy! Store cheese, meat, vegetables, and fruit in separate containers in the refrigerator for snacking the next day.
