On Tuesday, the companies launched Pearson’s Generative AI Foundations Certification. According to a release shared with ZDNET, the certification “bridges the gap between academic AI knowledge and real-world workplace applications, setting a new standard for AI proficiency in the global workforce.” The purpose is
The program is aimed at professionals and college and high school students, ensuring participants have the critical context and skills to use AI in the workplace. This also includes understanding AI capabilities, ethical guidelines, risk management, and use cases. We also discuss rapid engineering and improvement, bias, and privacy issues.

In creating the certification, Pearson acknowledged that there can be a difference between how AI is understood in academic settings and how it is applied in the real world. The certification addresses this by “bridging theory and practice” and applies to all sectors and industries, the release said.
“Proficiency in AI tools is quickly becoming as important as proficiency in Microsoft Office,” the companies said in a release. “This shift has led to a surge in demand for practical AI skills, with employers expecting a basic level of AI literacy from their employees.”

This certification falls within Pearson’s Critical Career Skills Portfolio, which includes other professional development resources.
Mindstone helps Pearson reassess the relevance of its certifications every six months to ensure that all new developments in this area are taken into account. MindStone will also provide training to help participants reach their full potential and earn certifications. The company says its approach to training “focuses on the practical use of AI for non-technical staff.”
According to Mindstone and Pearson, this certification differs from other certifications in that it emphasizes real-world application rather than just concepts. AWS offers several AI certifications. IBM’s option is free, but Apple has an option for students and alumni. Pearson has also released other AI education tools, including one aimed at saving teachers time.
