Play with clay! Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Seth Rogen, Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Haley Beaver It’s flocking Patrick Johnston Medic Raythion Temple Ceramics Studio There’s a special reason in Venice, California.
The artist, whose signature was embraced and known for his beloved vase, sat with ET to share why A-listers couldn’t get enough of his unique stuff collection.
“When I was 12, I was finally eligible to take the Wheel Slow class and haven’t stopped since. …I learned early on that imagination and motivation are the key to success in ceramics,” he explains.
Johnston also appreciates the bonds that the activity forms between people, even using ceramics as an outlet to “dismiss” his creativity.
“Regardless of your social status or background, my ceramic studio is a stadium-level and everyone is welcome,” he says.
“Our model is to create spaces that no one wants to leave. …All classes are potlucks. We eat together, eat together, clay together, clay together, and we’re together. Everyone in our class becomes friends. It’s a real community.”
The California native maintains a laid back approach when it comes to his educational style, whether you are a celebrity client or not.
“I give students the space to make mistakes and actually learn… I make sure everyone feels free to enjoy themselves with clay and normal… We don’t really care how famous you are.
But celebrities certainly care about clay, and they show it with a physical touch thanks to Johnston’s original embrace A-pot experience.
“After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004, I was working on my work and accidentally hugged it, but I left thinking it was absolutely breathtaking,” he shares.
From there, the ceramic expert wanted to capture the same innocence in all his works and give others the opportunity to do the same.
“The embrace experience can take anywhere from 30 minutes to three hours. …We can laugh, cry and truly feel every aspect of being alive.
“A hug generally makes people feel safe, heard, seen, and happy. It’s a very basic, but powerful human experience that anyone had at some point… People are hugging each other, or themselves.
