You may feel relieved to learn that my ultimatum last month paid off. I asked 100 readers Ecologist Sign up for mini assembly online. We won 200. So I would like to thank everyone who has committed to this world-shattering process.
Your individual actions are not merely a decline in the ocean, but an important part of the democratic wave of change we are creating. Well, “Maybe,” I listen to you say.
A friend recently said that assembly is a bit of a “taste of the month” for now. The problem with words like “assembly” is that people think it’s just something. It is one of the thousands of ideas that we are being attacked in an information-saturated society.
instinct
But assembly – not just modern trends to meet up and discuss what is happening and what needs to be done. They are as old as hills and have a rich history that shapes political change for at least 10,000 years.
More importantly, they are central social forms of radical and revolutionary political change. It’s more important than individual behavior and top-down leaders telling people what to do on a daily basis. See examples of Mondragon Cooperative or Rojava Revolution. They are real deals in our current context.
In 2018, I said Guardian That massive civil disobedience to the climate will occur within two years. Of course, I didn’t mean that it was guaranteed. I meant that social forms were ready. That meant that if the right person planted the seeds, it could take off. That’s exactly what happened when XR co-founders made their predictions come true in 2019.
I could feel that. But this was not a vague intuition.
Well, I’ll make another prediction. A party based on radical parliament will be the decisive move in Western democracy over the next five years. I can feel this too. And this time I have more than instinct to back it up.
chaos
In addition to civil disobedience, the social form of the assembly was developed so that it could take off. Of course, the context has been extremely fertile to plant and grow seeds, with a sense of disillusionment and betrayal since World War II.
As many people know, the big thing about me is that the devil is in the details. That’s what I want to write on my grave. There’s a slap dash conversation, then there’s an organized, innovative thing assembly.
Creating the latter requires attention to both microdesign and sequences, leading to changes in the concrete pathway to power: local, national and international systems. The fundamental change in the way our society operates is towards a more fair and equitable system.
