The NU Lady Bulldog defeated the Adamson Lady Falcons in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
This is close to the perfect first round, and the national university continues to focus on improvement.
“I think NU’s performance will continue to improve their progress in the second round of the first round and the final game on Sunday,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Sherwin Meneseth said Wednesday.
The final first round assignment in the UAAP Season 87 Women’s Volleyball Tournament is against Santo Tomas University, the last team in the NU’s way in the title run last season.
The Lady Bulldogs will set a 6-0 (Winroth) record heading into that showdown and add the dangerous Adamson Lady Falcons to their list of victims following 25-21, 25-23 and 25-18 in Wednesday’s victory at the Asian Arena mall.
The Lady Falcons gave the defending champions good training heading into the weekend, especially in the second set where NU needed clutch performances from Alyssa Solomon and Vange Alinsug.
“It was a good match for us because we knew Adamson wouldn’t fall without a fight,” Alinzug said. “So I had to keep pushing until the end of every set.”
Cold approach
Tigress is expected to give the Lady Bulldog a similar fight.
“We stick to the system and enjoy the game,” said UST Captain Detdet Pepito. “We learn a lot from them, so we’re excited to play them.”
Meanwhile, La Salle came close to the top with his fourth victory in six games after regaining 25-15, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-19.
It was Lady Spiker’s third straight set victory after a rare, shaky start to the season.
“It reminded me [the players] In these circumstances, mental strength must win. We made an error, lost control, and it cost us a third set,” Coach Ramil de Jesus said.
Shevana Laput performed a career performance, firing 25 points with 19 spikes, while Angel Canino contributed 17 points, including 13 attacks and 4 blocks. Aramia Maralang added 12 points. Rookie Mikole Reyes controlled the pace with a great set of 20.
Solomon led NU with the game’s best 22 points, providing 15 spikes, four blocks and three aces. Two MVP Beravellen added 9 points and 12 excavations, while Alinsug finished with 12 points and four excellent receptions.
Currently 2-4 and tied to fifth place with the University of the Philippines, Adamson will attempt to bounce back at 1pm on Sunday, facing a combat maroon.
