Description of four new Steatoda species (Araneae: Steatopodidae) from the Mediterranean region, with notes on some related species

Abstract

Four new Steatoda species from the Mediterranean region are diagnosed, described and illustrated: S .

koeni sp. nov. (♂♀, Morocco), S. ingeae sp. nov. (♂♀, Morocco), S. dickjonesi sp. nov. (♂♀, France)

and S. verae sp. nov. (♂♀, Spain). The holotype of S. triangulosa concolor (Caporiacco, 1933) is

If tested and found to be a subadult specimen, the subspecies will be elevated to species level and S.

concolor stat. nov. has been described from both sexes (male and female, Libya, Tunisia, and Algeria), and S.

trianguloides has been redescribed. Three new synonyms have been proposed. S. moerens (Thorell, 1875)

It was found to be a new synonym of S. latifasciata (Simon, 1873). S. incomposita (Denis, 1957) was discovered.

S. albomaculata infuscata, a new synonym of Steatoda albocincta (Lucas, 1846)

(Schenkel, 1925) is a new synonym of S. albomaculata (De Geer, 1778), S. venator (Audouin,

1826) is considered questionable as a noun. All European-Mediterranean Steatoda species except S. xerophila

Levy & Amitai 1982 is illustrated and a species key is provided.
