One of the most powerful figures in US law enforcement, top federal prosecutors in Manhattan have halted the prosecution of New York Mayor Eric Adams following an order from the Trump administration.
According to anyone familiar with the issue, veteran prosecutor Daniel Sasson, who took over the US lawyer for the Southern District of New York in December with acting skills, resigned.
Sussone rose for more than nine years at the U.S. Lawyer’s Office in Manhattan. This was accused of convicting FTX founder Sam Bank Manfried and 25 years in prison, stealing billions of dollars from clients at cryptocurrency exchanges.
The U.S. Department of Justice has directed the Manhattan office to halt Adams’ prosecution. Adams was charged last year with accepting the contributions of an illegal foreign campaign and receiving official benefits on behalf of the Turkish government.
Adams previously said, “I will follow the rules of the campaign and follow the law.”
Jay Clayton, who headed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission during the first Trump administration, was appointed to head the Manhattan Prosecutor’s Office, but has not yet been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
