[Many thanks to poet Geoffrey Philp for bringing this item to our attention.] Last Reel (Ian Rundle Publishers“The Great Passage” (2024) is the latest collection of poems by Marvin Morris, who was Jamaica’s Poet Laureate (2014-2017). It is his eighth book of poems.GreenerAccording to the publication, the book will be launched in April 2024 at the National Library of Jamaica (NLJ), alongside the unveiling of a bust of the poet created by Jamaican artist Kay Sullivan.

explanation: This new collection offers Morris’s tightly structured poems in his characteristically concise style, illustrating a range of attitudes toward creativity, love, sex, time, death and other realities. The works include dramatic monologues, satirical pieces, hymns, haiku and lyric poems that illustrate what critics have called “the most important” of his works. Wasafili Described as “Morris’s poetic compactness, his combination of verbal brevity and stylistic complexity,” The Last Reel will be welcomed by readers who have enjoyed Morris’ work, and may also attract new fans who focus on his brevity.

Marvin Morris He has published seven books of poetry, including: Peeling Orange (2017) and the author of three books of criticism. Miss Lou: Louise Bennett and Jamaican Culture (2014). He is Professor of Creative Writing and West Indian Literature at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
