In an age of unnecessary spinoffs, prequels no one wants, and sequels to the legacy of all remotely popular properties, it is rare that the creators will put their feet down and make it impossible for anyone to hurt their original vision. Famous creator Bill Waterton Calvin and Hobbesrefused the license for his character, Robert Zemeckis refused the proposal for the same method. Back to the Future 4and Stephen Hillenburg, creator of Spongebob Squarepants, was with them. Hillenburg didn’t want to do a spinoff, so Netflix’s latest hit movie, Plankton: MoviesAnother slap on the face of a genius cartoonist who answered the question, “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?”?
Plankton saves the world

The film ends with a recovery with a note that it only works thanks to the overwhelmingly hilarious nature of Spongebob, but it reminds us of why Hillenburg was so stubborn about the spinoff.
Stephen Hillenburg’s creative genius
