First Look Trailer Paramount+‘s all-original film “Star Trek: Section 31,” which aired during Paramount’s “Star Trek” panel in a packed Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, was a shocking journey into Starfleet’s secretive cabal.
Directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi (The Fourth Kind, Falling Skies, Star Trek: Discovery) from a screenplay by Craig Sweeney, Section 31 is set to hit the popular platform in 2025 and stars Omari Hardwick, Casey Rohl, Sam Richardson, Sven Ruyglock, Robert Kazinsky, Hanbury Gonzales and James-Hiroyuki Liao. The teaser trailer, released on Saturday (July 27), is the best preview yet of the new Trek film, but if you need a refresher, check out our guide to everything you need to know about Star Trek: Section 31. Our Star Trek streaming guide will help you watch all the other Trek shows leading up to the new film.
Here’s the official synopsis:
“In the Paramount+ Original Film Star Trek: Section 31, Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh stars as Imperial Guard Philippa Georgiou, who joins a secret Starfleet unit tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, but must also confront the sins of her past.”
In keeping with the top-secret superspy theme, the edgy SDCC production’s pale yellow title card reads, “This preview contains content deemed inappropriate by Starfleet Common Media Division: colorful metaphors, disintegration, Deltarian fraternization, and references to unauthorized jumps.”
Set to Beyoncé’s “Formation,” the two-minute preview offers our first glimpse at a series of flashbacks that reveal the atrocities committed by a young Philippa Georgiou (Miku Martineau), who rose to become the feared and celebrated emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Earth Empire.
The tone and style of this first teaser suggests that the “Discovery” spinoff known as “Section 31” has a hilarious, raw sensibility that will transport fans into the dark world of “Star Trek” secret agents. Yeoh seems to be having fun playing the role of a cunning dictator with a violent past who is now trapped in the Prime Universe and recruited to be part of this covert intelligence team with very few rules.
Section 31 certainly strives to create a unique look and feel that might feel a bit off at first, but with a capable cast, consistent tone and veteran directorial leadership in Osunsanmi, this Suicide Squad-esque dive into the Star Trek universe could be a surprisingly refreshing addition to Paramount+’s slate of content on the final frontier.
Star Trek: Section 31 is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeney, Aaron Bayers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Webber, Trevor Roth, Rod Roddenberry and Michelle Yeoh. Paramount+ Early 2025.
