Mexico “is a key decision for the future of the country” and “other trading partners will be sought if necessary,” she said at a morning press conference.
Sinbaum said Tuesday that her government will respond to Trump’s 25% tariffs with retaliation obligations and will call supporters to Mass on Sunday at Mexico City’s main square to hear more details.
At the same time, she said her government prefers negotiated solutions and said she hopes he will talk to Trump over the phone about tariffs related to fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration.
The door to the dialogue “should be open at all times,” Sinbaum said.
Last week, her leftist government pledged to take coordinated steps to tackle Washington and the drug flow. He also handed over to the United States some of the most famous incarcerated drug lords, including the Cartel Kingpin, which he had hoped for over decades on murder of American murder agents.
Sinbaum accused Washington of violating Mexico-Canada free trade agreements renegotiated during Trump’s 2017-2021 presidency.
“Are we responsible for the companies that came to Mexico and decided to export to the US? No, that’s the result of President Trump’s first term and the good relationship since the trade deal he came before,” she said.
The US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the previous NAFTA agreement on July 1, 2020, is expected to be reviewed by July next year.
