The long-awaited remake of 2001’s Max Payne and 2003’s Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne has “entered full-scale production,” according to a financial statement from series production company Remedy Entertainment.
Few details about the game or its release date have been revealed, but rumors have suggested it could be released as soon as 2026. Remedy and Rockstar Games have announced a partnership to develop and publish the remake in 2022. It’s expected to be released on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
Max Payne is considered a milestone in post-apocalyptic video games on both console and PC thanks to its neo-noir atmosphere, hard-hitting storyline, and the introduction of slowed-down “bullet time” action to gunfights, a mechanic inspired by the Matrix film series that has since been imitated in many action-adventure titles.
A (very) brief history of Max Payne
The first two games were developed by Remedy and published by Rockstar, who owns the IP, and the third, Max Payne 3, was developed and published by Rockstar in 2012.
The series tells the story of the titular protagonist, a typical tense cop typecast, whose search for the murderer of his wife and child leads him to uncover a larger conspiracy involving organized crime, big pharma and the government.
The first two games won numerous awards, including Game of the Year and Readers’ Choice Awards from multiple publications. The first Max Payne was the basis for a 2008 film adaptation, which was less successful; star Mark Wahlberg was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for “Worst Actor” for his role.
