Within the fiction that Mad Max constructed, it makes the most sense to think of Mad Max, Furiosa, Immortan Joe, Dementus, Aunt Entity, the pilot Jedediah, and even Master Blaster as composite characters created through generations of campfire stories. While these people, or versions of them, certainly existed at some point in the timeline, these are not the people we see on screen. Instead, we see representations of their reputations as these stories have been passed down from generation to generation.
In this context, continuity doesn’t matter in the world of Mad Max, because we’re looking at a history passed down orally over many decades.
It doesn’t matter if Furiosa is played by Charlize Theron or Anya Taylor-Joy. It doesn’t matter if Mad Max is played by Mel Gibson or Tom Hardy. What matters is keeping these stories alive and giving people something to cling to to carry them through the wilderness until peace is restored, and I think that’s the whole purpose of this series.
