Thousands of firefighters are battling fast-moving wildfires across Los Angeles County, killing at least five people and seriously injuring many more.

Officials said Thursday that while progress had been made on the Sunset, Woodley, Hurst and Sunswept fires, additional “extreme fire activity” was expected. Wind gusts up to 90 mph We continue to take on the challenge of firefighting.

“Significant fire growth remains likely due to ongoing and new fires,” forecasters warned.

The Palisades Fire, one of the most destructive natural disasters the city has ever experienced, is still not extinguished. That fire has burned more than 17,200 acres, and the Eaton Fire, which is based in Altadena and Pasadena, has burned about 10,600 acres.

The causes of all the wildfires are currently under active investigation, but thousands of buildings and businesses were destroyed.

Approximately 180,000 county residents have been ordered to evacuate, and nearly 200,000 people have been advised to evacuate.

More California customers lost power Thursday, with a tracker reporting nearly 420,000 outages. PowerOutage.us.

Sheriff Robert Luna said his deputies were patrolling the affected area. ”

“Some of them looked like bombs had been dropped,” he said.
