Cassandra Webb is a New York City paramedic who begins to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to face revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious enemy bent on their deaths.
Movie review (no spoilers)
The fourth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, Madame Web brings a different perspective on an all-new group of heroes living in the heart of New York. I have to warn my readers to keep an open mind when going to the movies. This movie is about Madame Web and her role as a protector to three young women who will play a bigger role in the future…hopefully. If you’re expecting Peter Parker/Spider-Man to strike out and catch the crooks, you’ll be sadly disappointed.
I strongly welcome this new take on Spider-Woman within Marvel. Ever since Across the Spider-Verse, I’ve been thinking about whether we’d ever get to see Spider-Woman on screen, and the question “how?” I’ve always seen Cassandra Webb/Madame Web play the role of a motherly protector. Personally, I think Dakota Johnson played her role perfectly in that sense.
Sidney Sweeney, Isabella Merced, and Celeste O’Connor are a breath of fresh air in the roles of Julia Cornwall, Anya Corazon, and Matty Franklin. According to the movie’s villains, they have been teased to play big roles in the future. The film’s new villain, played by Tahar Rahim, provides a thrilling experience at first, but is defeated far too easily by the end.
Madame Web provided a good introduction to the new character of Madame Web, but unfortunately it doesn’t promise any continuity or connection to the existing films within the current worldview. Several Easter eggs in the movie point to another popular Marvel character, but there’s still a lot of story left to tell, so stay tuned for more teaser opportunities for Cassie’s Web and the movie’s other heroines. I wish I had. Unfortunately there was no post-credits scene, which was a shame considering Madame Web is part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe and continuity is something many have come to expect. I’d be interested to see if we see continuity in the future, either in the form of a sequel or in the form of cameos from Cassie, Julia, Matty, and Anya in other films.
