J. Michael Luttig, a respected and deeply conservative retired federal judge, has announced that he will support Kamala Harris and vote for the Democratic candidate for the first time.

CNN obtained Luttig’s statement.

In the 2024 presidential election, there can only be one party and one presidential candidate who can claim the title of defender and guardian of American democracy, the Constitution, and the rule of law. Therefore, I will vote without hesitation for the Democratic presidential candidate, Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. .

…

“In voting for Vice President Harris, I assume that her policy views will be significantly different from mine. However, I am indifferent in this election to her policy views on issues other than American democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law, as I believe that is how all Americans should be.”

…

As the former president continues to knowingly falsely claim that he won the 2020 election, leaving millions of Americans with no trust and confidence in national elections anymore, and many never will again, many Americans, especially and sadly younger Americans, are beginning to question whether constitutional democracy is the best form of self-government for America.

…

The time has come for America to make a choice. It is time for all Americans to stand up and say whether they believe in our democracy, our Constitution, and the rule of law, and whether they want the same for America, or whether they don’t.

There will be plenty of time after the election to debate policy differences, but nothing is more important than democracy. Without democracy, there is no freedom. Without freedom, all other policy differences are meaningless.

Trump This is a threat unlike anything this country has ever faced before. An anti-democratic candidate has taken control of one of our two major political parties and convinced most of its members to support authoritarianism.

The way to defeat this threat is to never let them hold power, and that means defeating MAGA at the ballot box again and again until Republicans realize they can never win again unless they stop opposing democracy.

Luttig’s endorsement is important because it sends a message to other democratic conservatives that it’s okay to vote for Harris because freedom is bigger than party labels.
