Israeli European allies are sending aid in the coming hours to tackle a fiery wildfire after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a state of emergency and called for international aid.

Fires and rescuers say the furious wildfires outside Jerusalem reportedly destroyed about 5,000 acres of land, including 3,000 acres of forest.

Firefighters from Greece, Cyprus, Croatia and Italy will arrive to tackle the flames in the coming hours, with reports that Ukraine, Spain, France and others have pledged to send aid.

Netanyahu said 18 people have been arrested on suspicion of igniting a wildfire, but the cause of the flames remains unknown.

At least dozens have been hospitalized, and 10 are being handled on-site by medical professionals.

“This is probably the largest fire in the country,” Jerusalem district fire station commander Schmrick Friedman told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

He warned that 60 mph winds could challenge the situation and dramatically increase the risk of fires in the “near future.”

“It lasts for a very long time. We’re far from having control.”

What is Israel Independence Day?

Israel Independence Day is a national celebration, also known as Yomhatzmat, commemorating the Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948.

To avoid conflict with the Jewish Sabbath, this day is rarely celebrated on the fifth day of Iyar, the second month of the Jewish calendar, and instead falls a few days before or after.

This year, the celebration began on the evening of April 30th and was extended until May 1st.

It is usually celebrated with large family dishes in parks and forests.
