Rep. Jamie Ruskin has launched an investigation into how Donald Trump is publishing pardons in a letter to Trump’s DOJ lawyer Ed Martin.
Ruskin wrote to Martin:
I ask you to explain the standards and processes you are currently using.
As you are undoubtedly aware, the mission of the pardon lawyer’s office is to “favour a second chance through generosity” by reviewing all applications from convicted offenders and making recommendations to the president who supports the “interest of justice” that is consistent and inequitable.
Unfortunately, at least it appears to be using the office of pardon lawyers to benefit the president’s loyal political followers and most generous donors and to prefer pardons.
These Americans rely on your office to seek a fair shot at the second chance in a process that has some real integrity. The signs are troublesome. During your brief tenure as a US lawyer for the District of Columbia, you described yourself and your office career prosecutor as “President Trump.” [sic] lawyer. “You use your office to position allies of presidents convicted of political violence and other crimes beyond the law, target his imaginary enemies, and put the public safety of our country’s capital at risk.
