In the second episode of Knowledgeable Youth, students discuss a topic close to their current experience, one shared by many in Vienna: migration. A group of Ukrainian students explore migration and what it means to leave one’s homeland and find a new one.
Together with Ukrainian scientist and researcher Olena Yermakova from RECET, they are gaining insights from her paper. ‘On the way home’Together with your students, explore migration through personal experiences of forced migration.
Neighborhoods turn into war zones and residents suddenly become refugees. Ensuring safety and caring for those who remain creates a double burden. Ukrainians who fled the country experience both support and tension. The dilemma of returning or staying is both political and deeply personal.
The series was developed by students at the Free People Education Hub, a Vienna-based school for Ukrainian youth displaced by Russia’s war in Ukraine, who, together with researchers, explore current themes in social sciences.
The project was co-coordinated by Carine Chen (Eurozine) and Irena Remestwenski (RECET).
