5 star quarterback moments bryce underwood Four-star tight end Eli Owens, who committed to the University of Michigan from LSU on Thursday, sent a two-word message on social media.
“I’m back,” Owens said.
After winning the national championship last season, the University of Michigan did not return this season. The offense was like a backside.
The Wolverines’ 5-5 season was largely due to offensive incompetence, as the Wolverines averaged just over 20 points per game and only threw 10 touchdowns in 10 games.
Davis Warren has more interceptions than touchdowns. Alex Orsi is completing just over half of his passes. Jack Tuttle retired midway through the season. Four-star freshman Jadyn Davis never redshirted.
You don’t have to be Jim Harbaugh to understand that the University of Michigan’s offense is pathetic and cannot stand up to one of the proudest fan bases in college football.
So on the show, the collective Dave Portnoy went looking for a quarterback, and the Wolverines landed one of the biggest fish available in Underwood. He is a five-star, second in the 2025 class rankings behind Ohio State’s Tavian St. Clair. That also opens up a lot of future storylines.
It’s been a long courtship, with the University of Michigan showing a modicum of interest in the Wolverines through the Belleville, Mich., standout’s recruiting efforts, from coach Sherone Moore to a number of assistants.
He committed to LSU in January. But in recent months, the coaching staff has become increasingly involved with Underwood, especially as Michigan’s quarterback situation has been unsustainable.
They brought out the big guns. And a big checkbook. And they did it Thursday with one of the most monumental flips in Rivals history dating back to 2002.
“He was the missing piece of the puzzle,” four-star running back Jasper Parker said.
“I have faith in Coach Moore and the rest of the staff. I knew they could make it happen.”
4-star WR Jacob Washington said: I can’t wait to catch Bryce’s touchdown in the Big House. It’s going to be scary. ”
It would have been scarier, at least for Michigan fans, if Moore and his staff hadn’t been able to pull off the big flip.
Four-star quarterback Carter Smith backed away from his commitment (Wisconsin would be his new leader) once talks with Underwood got into full swing.
The transfer portal is always available and many programs have been quickly changed by transfer QBs, including many included in this year’s College Football Playoff talk, but there are no guarantees there.
Underwood was the key to bringing it all together. And with less than two weeks until signing day, Michigan has done just that.
“I’m very happy,” four-star office worker Caden Strayhorn said. “Me and him have been talking about playing together in college since we were in middle school, and it would be great to be his center.
“It definitely felt good.”
