Iran and the United States have launched their first talks on Tehran’s nuclear program. Tehran says the debate could lead to a “first understanding.”
Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has announced the commencement of talks for X. State TV television previously reported that two delegations were in separate rooms, and Omani officials exchanged notes between the two.
Prior to the talks in Oman on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araguchi said, “If the other side took part in the consultations using the same approach, if God is pleased, there is an initial opportunity for understanding that could lead to a path of negotiation.”
He said both parties can agree with a timeline for future debates if US negotiators led by Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, are showing “good will.” He added that Iran is seeking a “fair and honorable agreement from an equal standpoint.”
Araguchi met with Omani’s counterpart Badr al-Busaidi before the meeting and told him to convey Iran’s “core stance and red lines” to Americans, state television also said.
