of british medical journal (BMJ) has become the world’s first major publication to announce it will no longer accept advertising from banks that finance fossil fuels.
As a result of this policy, several of the UK’s leading high street banks have placed advertisements. Barclays, HSBC, NatWest, Santander, LloydsAll are funding the fossil fuel industry, but this is not allowed throughout the BMJ publications.
Plymouth GP Dr Hilary Neave has been campaigning for years to stop Barclays advertising from appearing in the BMJ. they said ecologist: “So many organizations have declared a climate emergency but are not acting on it.

“As doctors, we see firsthand the devastating impact our heating society is having on people’s health, and banks like Barclays that fund fossil fuels are a big part of that. I know there are. BMJ We listened and have now banned advertising for these banks. I hope many other organizations will follow their lead. ”
Veronica Wignall, from campaign group AdFree Cities, said: “The BMJ’s principles are to stop big banks like Barclays from tarnishing their public image while continuing to funnel billions to the world’s worst polluters. We welcome these measures.”
“Advertising bans for fossil fuel companies are becoming more common to eliminate misinformation and protect the environment and our health. The same logic applies to bans on financial institutions funding climate change. We need to end advertising.”
