The 2025 major championship season will definitely work well for Rory McIlroy.
The PGA Championship took place at Quazul Hollow in Charlotte, with McIlroy winning the Wells Fargo Championship more than four times. The Open Championship returned to Royal Portrush in his native Northern Ireland, breaking the course record by filming a 61 at the age of 16.
But there is one thing that McIlroy is clearly more pine than anything else. The only thing missing from his resume – the sixth career grand slam in modern history.
McIlroy arrives at Augusta National in the best possible form that we wonder. Isn’t 2025 the year he captured the Master, and will that happen?
Not to be wary about one of the greatest golfers of this millennium, but McIlroy already has plenty of chances to come and go in and out of his green jacket. He will turn 36 next month and has no history of Tiger Woods’ injury, but it’s not reasonable to expect him to play this forever.
McIlroy will be ranked above the FedEx Cup rankings this week Winning at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am And in the Player Championship, he defeated two incredibly strong fields. No one on tour gets more strokes per round than he does. McIlroy put it down well and, as usual, stripes everything from the tee.
His second place finish last year in 2022 and at T-22 appeared in the shadow of champion Scotty Scheffler, who had been the dominant Tiger-esque troops in golf for the past few years, but it’s finally been a bit late. Schaeffler has not won the tournament in 2025 yet. On the surface, he leaves the door a bit in Ajar for his chief contest.
But we did this dance before: “Look at everyone, it’s time for Rory!” His major championship drought has reached 10 seasons and count, captivating 21 top-10 finishes in the majors since his last breakthrough.
Whether he won this week is entirely up to what lies between McIlroy and his ears. I know if we blow away our chances of opening back-to-back — falling on Wyndham Clark and Bryson Deccanbeau — my skin will start to raw when I reach the biggest stage in golf.
McIlroy’s Mental toughness is at the heart of his plan In the week.
“It’s just a story, it’s noise,” he said Tuesday. “I’m just trying to block that noise as much as possible. I need to treat this tournament like every other tournament I play all year round.
“Look, I understand the story and the noise. There’s a lot of expectations and accumulation coming to this tournament every year, but you have to bow your head and focus on your work.”
When Sergio Garcia first won the Masters in 2017, he did so in his 19th start. Thursday marks McIlroy’s 17th career start.
I’m not saying he won’t win a major in his 40s. Woods and Jack Nicklaus did. However, the next generation led by Schaeffler is stronger than ever. “Next year is always there” will no longer apply someday.
