In May 2022, Irina Khamaiko founded an educational center for Ukrainian teenagers who fled to Austria after the Russian invasion. The goal was clear: to ensure a safe educational environment, help students learn German and allow them to continue their education.
today,he Free People’s Educational Center in Vienna is still open. In this first episode of the Knowledgeable Youth Podcast series, two students from the school, Lena and Maria, interview Irena Kamaiko. They discuss the language barrier, the Austrian school system, the challenges of making friends in a new country, and more.
The series was developed by students at the Free People Education Hub, a Vienna-based school for Ukrainian youth displaced by Russia’s war in Ukraine, who, together with researchers, explore current themes in social sciences.
The project was co-coordinated by Carine Chen (Eurozine) and Irena Remestwenski (RECET).
“Informed Youth: Science Communication in Wartime” is co-organized by Eurozine, RECET, Radio Orange and the Free People Education Hub Vienna. The project is funded by the Culture Office of the City of Vienna. Find out more about the project here. www.eurozine.com/focal-points/youth-project/.
