The extent of the damage has been revealed after Hurricane Milton devastated parts of Florida, leaving at least 17 people dead.

Six people were killed in a St. Lucie County retirement village by a tornado sparked by a hurricane after more than a dozen twisters struck the area within 20 minutes.

Phosphate mine spills in Tampa Bay after Hurricane Milton
The owner of a major phosphate mine has revealed that pollutants leaked into Tampa Bay during the hurricane.
Mosaic said in a statement that heavy rains from the storm overwhelmed the collection system at its Riverview location, forcing excess water through manholes and into drainage channels leading to the bay. The company announced that the breach had been fixed on Thursday.
Mosaic said the spill likely exceeded the minimum reporting standard of 17,500 gallons, but declined to say how much the total amount would be.

FEMA Administrator DeAnne Criswell said FEMA needs additional funding from Congress.
FEMA Administrator DeAnne Criswell told reporters Friday that her agency needs to pass additional funding soon.
“The disaster relief fund certainly doesn’t have enough money to continue collecting everything I have throughout the fiscal year,” Criswell said.
“We’re evaluating every day how much it’s costing us, so we can continue to work with leaders and Congress on when replenishment is needed,” she said. “We’re going to need it. It’s just a matter of when.”

National Hurricane Center’s prediction of Milton’s path was ‘unusual’
The National Hurricane Center’s path forecast for Hurricane Milton’s final path was unusually accurate.
storm It was always predicted to make landfall near Tampa Bay.
Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, told Axios that this will never change. He said the track forecast exceeded the typical average error rate for such storms.
“The predicted trajectory of the fall site was unusual,” McNoldy said. “I think we all wish we could always maintain that accuracy for this long. It doesn’t change the fate of the final impact, but it certainly helps with preparation and evacuation.”
