World number two Michael Smith suffered a heavy loss on the opening day of the Hungarian Darts Trophy, losing to Jonny Clayton.

Smith, who lost to Luke Littler in the World Series of Darts final in Amsterdam on Sunday, was defeated 6-3 by his Welsh opponent.

Clayton led by three legs in Budapest, hitting four 180s and averaging a score of 94.17, but Smith suffered a first-round defeat despite a brief fightback.

Creighton’s next opponent will be top seed and defending champion Dave Chisnall.

Peter Wright beat Joe Cullen in the final and will face Raymond van Barneveld, who beat Richie Edhuis 6-3 in the second round, while the Dutchman faces Ross Smith on Saturday.

Nathan Aspinall, James Wade and Andrew Gilding are also among those notable as first-round winners, while Michael van Gerwen, Luke Humphreys and Gerwyn Price begin their campaigns on Saturday.
