Astronomy enthusiast America, prepare for a treat! In the early morning of March 14th, a total lunar eclipse can be seen throughout the United States. This type of solar eclipse occurs when the Earth blocks light from the sun, which normally illuminates the moon, and looks deep and red as if covered in blood.
On the night of March 13th and early morning of March 14th, the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow, known as Umbra, covers the moon at its maximum stage. Moons are relatively common when the moon is partially illuminated, but those that match the full moon are relatively rare. On average, each region of the Earth has the opportunity to see a lunar eclipse only once every 2.5 years.
This year, the second lunar eclipse occurred on September 7th. You’ll see in the eastern part of Africa, most of Asia, and in the western half of Australia.
NASA video shows when to watch the lunar eclipse in the US in March 2025.
The moon appears red during the moon’s solar eclipse How sunlight interacts In the Earth’s atmosphere. The visible sunlight looks white, but it actually consists of a combination of lights of different colors. How much atmosphere They have to travel. For this reason, The sky looks blue When the sun is at the height of the sky, often red at sunset, the sun is low, and its light travels long distances into the atmosphere.
When sunlight hits the Earth’s atmosphere during the moon’s solar eclipse, light frequencies are scattered outwardly towards the blue edge of the visible spectrum, away from the Earth’s Umbra, while those with longer wavelengths towards the red part of the spectrum bend inward and cast on the moon.
What time does the lunar eclipse occur?
According to NASA, the solar eclipse will begin at 8:57pm Pacific time. In Mexico, the phenomenon begins at 10:57pm, 12:57am ART in Argentina and 5:57am CET in Spain. The advancement of the Earth’s shadow across the moon will slow down. Observers will notice that satellites gradually lose light when they introduce them into the total solar eclipse before they redden the blood. The whole solar eclipse, or the time of the blood moon, is expected to appear in PDT at 11:26pm. The climax lasts about an hour.
