HoshiThe traditional Japanese inn in Komatsu, Japan, is distinguished as being the second oldest hotel in the world, and is the “oldest family business in the world.” Built in 718 AD, Hoshi has been run by the same family for 46 consecutive generations. Count them. 46th generation.

Japan is a country with a deep tradition. And when you are born into a family that is the caretaker of an institution 1,300 years ago, you find yourself suffering from problems that most of us can’t imagine. That is especially true when you are the daughter of the Hoshi family, a modern woman who wants to free herself from tradition. Still, history and strong family expectations continue to appeal to her.

The story of Dairyoshi is told with disgust in the short documentary above. It was filmed in 2014 by German filmmaker Fritz Schumann.
