Speaking about ‘Word’, frontman Dimitri Giannopoulos said in a statement:
The song is about reality distortion, specifically how our sense of time and reality can be warped by the sense of someone else… out of love, indecision, or insecurity, we try to fit someone else’s vision of our future. Maybe that someone is more confident and has more power over you than you. A problem I’ve struggled with is feeling unworthy of making my own future, so I’ve looked to others for guidance – family, friends, lovers. This theme is summed up in the song as the conflict between two people in a relationship, how love and the anxiety that comes with it can be powerful and make you feel disconnected from the world. This distortion is manifested in the lyric “milking with an axe handle,” a literal image of a distorted reality. I got the idea from the movie “Häxan,” where there’s a painting of a witch milking with an axe instead of a cow.
