Seasoned salt is one of those condiments that can be used on almost anything. I usually keep this homemade seasoning mix in a pint or quart size mason jar in my spice cabinet. It’s easy to add to soups, stews, chicken or beef dishes, and it also adds flavor to egg dishes and breakfast dishes.
It’s named after the fact that it’s literally a mix of salt (I use Himalayan salt) and spices. It takes about a minute to make (or 2 if you get your toddler to help), and because it combines many common spices, it cuts down on the time it takes to season a recipe.
My History with Seasoned Salt
This is a pain to type now, but when I was in college, Lawry’s Seasoning Salt was the only condiment I had on hand. I used it to make my ramen noodles taste better when I cooked them in the microwave (embarrassing, if that were even possible), and the supermarket version contained a lot of ingredients that I now try to avoid.
These blends are made with table salt instead of mineral-rich sea salt. They also contain anti-caking agents like genetically modified cornstarch and tricalcium phosphate. And while some seasoned salt blends claim to be “MSG-free” on the label, they’re hiding a secret: If you turn it over and read the fine print, you’ll see that the product contains monosodium glutamate, which occurs naturally from a mystery “spice.”
Thankfully, my taste buds and food choices have matured considerably: I now use upgraded versions of store-bought seasoned salts and a wide range of healthier recipes.
How to make seasoned salt
This salt uses the natural flavors of wholesome spices, so no weird mystery ingredients are needed. It tastes similar to taco seasoning, but without the cumin. We love how versatile the flavor is for a wide range of dishes, but you can also customize it to your liking.
Instead of regular paprika, try smoked paprika for an extra bacon flavor. Some recipes also add turmeric for a pretty yellow color and anti-inflammatory properties. If you like it spicy, try adding a dash of cayenne pepper.
This recipe is really simple and just involves mixing spices together – perfect to make with your kids as mixing and blending is a skill young children are great at.
Homemade seasoned salt
Today, I want to introduce you to homemade seasoned salts to reflect on my poor eating habits during college and to celebrate my love of real food. After all, as Erma Bombeck said,
“Once you bring spices home, they stay with you forever. Women don’t throw them away. Egyptians were buried with spices. You know which spices to take with you when you go out.”
