I didn’t think I like curry powder. I don’t know where my negative opinions came from, but I once accidentally added it to the soup and discovered that I absolutely love it. The unique and intricate flavor makes curry powder an incredible addition to your meal.
I now add this curry powder recipe to my breakfast dish, like our regular vegetable scramble. It is also used for meat, soups and roasted vegetables. I have experimented with adding it to traditional curry dishes, but these are definitely not my strength (does anyone want to teach me?).
What is Curry Powder?
The term “curry” is not a clear concept in the food world. We apply it to any number of spicy and sassy dishes and usually associate it with Asian or Indian dishes. Interestingly, most curry powder seasonings don’t use any curry leaves at all, but they’re mixed with a variety of rustic smoky spices.
Curry concept The British Indian occupation and the British were labelled with food as Indian curry. So today’s curry powder is actually a European interpretation of Indian cuisine. Over the years they have evolved several, but they feature different combinations of spices with different aromas.
There are spice blends and fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds, paprika, ground ginger, mustard seeds, coriander seeds, cayenne pepper, black pepper, chili powder, cumin seeds, bay leaf, garlic powder, and cinnamon. Curry spice blends can be ground with the whole toasted spice and then ground in a spice grinder. Other recipes (including this) use ground spices for faster versions.
Given the health benefits of spices, curry is a great way to work with all of the spices.
How to make (or taste) mild curry powder seasonings
Why do you make curry powder when you can buy it? A word: fever! Most pre-made curry seasonings packed with plenty of heat and spices. This can be difficult, especially for small children.
By creating your own DIY spice mix, you can adjust the heat to the right level for your family. You can also tweak the recipe to remove any spices you dislike.
How to use curry powder
There are many traditional Indian recipes and adaptations that work well with curry powder. It also serves as a seasoning for sweet potatoes, roasted chickpeas and chicken.
If you don’t think you like curry, you may not have had a blend that suits your taste. Try making your own curry powder. First, add a small amount to a simple recipe like meat, roasted vegetables, soups, and more, and work from there.
