The Hockey World Cup will return in 2028, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced at Bell Center at a joint press conference with NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh.

The World Cup of Hockey, held jointly by the NHL and NHLPA, features world-class players competing in international tournaments. This is the fourth edition of previous tournaments held in 1996, 2004 and 2016.
“Players love representing their country on the international hockey stage. By announcing their return to the World Cup of Hockey in 2028, they will establish the best international calendar, and the four countries will be able to see the return of the four countries. The World Cup will introduce links to NHL rules, NHL referees, linemen, and NHL sizes.
The bidding process for host cities and venues is expected to begin in the coming months. NHL players will also return to the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in 2030 and return to the French Alps again.
