Employee and government benefit organizations Sun Life announced it is partnering with Hinge Health to provide members with digital access to technology and clinicians for musculoskeletal care.
Founded in 2015, Hinge Health provides individuals with musculoskeletal conditions with access to health coaches, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, surgical decision support and other technology resources.
Certain members of Hinge It offers pelvic women’s health programs and Enso, an FDA-cleared wearable device that delivers electrical pulses to relieve everyday pain. Members can also schedule in-person physical therapy appointments in select metro areas.
Sun Life members can access Hinge Health through the company’s mobile and web-based app, Health 360.
“Employers, especially those who self-fund health insurance, are understandably concerned about the rising trend in health care costs related to MSK diseases,” Jen Collier, president of health and risk solutions at Sun Life US, said in a statement.
“Sun Life’s claims data reflects national trends, so it made sense to partner with Hinge Health, one of the most clinically validated MSK companies in the market. Through this new relationship, our members will receive proven MSK care and an omnichannel engagement approach that can positively impact both first-time and high-cost medical bills.”
Larger trends
Hinge Health is one of the most prominent companies in the digital MSK care and physical therapy space.
The company has announced multiple funding rounds in 2021, including: $300 million in Series D, $400 million in Series E and $200 million in secondary investments.
As of the Series E investment, Hinge had raised a total of $828 million and its valuation had soared to $6.2 billion.

Earlier this year, TechCrunch reported Hinge has laid off about 10% of its employees across various departments, including its engineering team.
Other companies in the digital musculoskeletal space include: SWORD Health, Glen Tullman’s Transcarent, and tennis player Andy Roddick’s ViewFi.
Last year, virtual care company Teladoc announced partnerships with SWORD Health and Hinge Health to provide employers with access to both companies’ digital MSK services.
Transcarent, a digital platform focused on the self-insured employer market, and ViewFi, a technology-enabled virtual orthopedic and rehabilitation platform, Last year, they partnered to provide virtual orthopedic and musculoskeletal care to patients through Transcarent’s Consult Solution.
