Sky Sports Cricket’s Lauren Winfield Hill believes Heather Knight proved his British worth after losing his captain after a miserable winter.
Following a 16-0 whitewash in the ashes, Knight resigned from his captain role as Nat Cyber Brandt, with manager John Lewis giving way for Charlotte Edwards to take over.
The new era began with the opening T20I in the series against the West Indies as England left with a comfortable 8-wicket victory.
Despite the refreshed outfit, when England adopted a 147 chase, it was former skipper Knight (43NO) and partnered with Sophia Dunkley (81NO) as a key duo who shared an unbroken 91 run partnership.
Meanwhile, Sciver-Brunt fell into a two-ball duck.
For Winfield Hill, it is a moment that eases doubts about her role on Knight’s own part and reaffirms that she is one of the best players England has to offer.
“We’ll really see her position on this side,” Winfield Hill said.
“You’re no longer a captain, but you’re still one of the best players in the country.
“No one would want to try the crease in that situation more than Heather Knight to watch the game.
“She’s really good to chase, especially in chasing. She knows the tempo and she knows her strengths.
“That would be just right for her to reaffirm that she has real value on this side.
“Because she’ll question that when she loses the captain.”
Dunkley: Knight stands out for the group
Dunkley also praises her former skipper and batting partner, claiming to be “exceptional” with the group through the transition from her leadership to a new era.
Certainly, she believes that “nothing has changed” when it comes to the leadership Knight brings to her team.
“Heather is outstanding around the group,” Dunkley said.
“She is a natural leader, everyone respects her and nothing has changed in that respect.
“She hits really well and has had a great partnership. It’s great to see her doing her best.”
Dunkley thinks it hasn’t changed much for Knight, but admits that under new coach Edwards there is a different feeling from what he told him to keep things “simple” and “serene.”
“Edwards is calm and clear about what she wants to do. We had a good week in the game. It’s great to start with a victory,” Dunkley added.
“I really wanted to come out and contribute to the team and make an impact on the game, and I’m glad you did that tonight.
“She plays with me with my strengths about what she wants to do to me.
“My strength is filming the game when I want to make decisions and when I want to make it clear. There’s nothing there. Keep it simple and that’s what I was trying to do tonight.”
