The ASEAN Trade Agreement came into effect in January 2010. In August 2023, both parties published a full review of existing contracts for the product by 2025.
“The pace of talks is slow,” the official said.
ASEAN as a group is one of India’s leading trading partners, earning a share of around 11% in the country’s global trade.
The contract review has been a long-standing demand for Indian industry and India, and we look forward to an upgraded agreement that addresses the asymmetry in current bilateral trade and makes trade more balanced and sustainable.
India is seeking a review to eliminate barriers and misuse of the agreement. ASEAN members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Exports to ASEAN, India’s 10 countries, were US$41.2 billion between 2023 and 2024, but imports were aggregated to US$80 billion in the previous year. ASEAN accounts for 10.9% of India’s global trade.
