Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz attended the traditional first interviews and bought tickets to the nomination process (no matter how much the Republican Party and the media tried to make it seem like an unprecedented act of cowardice).
The Washington media has been acting in recent weeks as if they are the only ones who can explain to voters what this election is all about (when in fact they’re doing a terribly poor job of doing so), and that’s the problem.
when CNN When interviewer Dana Bash began asking Harris what her “first day on the agenda” was, she rattled off a series of policy proposals. Her answer was, “You’ve been vice president for three years now, why haven’t you done it yet?” First, she vice president. That was in her question, but it feigned ignorance about the political landscape in Washington, D.C. Bash knows that Republicans have run the House for the past year and a half, and she knows that the Supreme Court has struck down various efforts, including student loan forgiveness.
An honest interviewer needs to put the political situation in context, or else it will encourage obstructionism, where Republicans have not paid the price for obstructionism and the Supreme Court has not received the criticism it clearly deserves.
So how should you approach it?
“What would you do if your party took complete control of Congress?”
“If Republicans continue to control parts of Congress, what can we accomplish with a gridlocked government?”
“The Supreme Court has made it harder for the executive branch to issue rules. How does that change how you view your potential role as president?”
These questions are honest, they give viewers proper context, and they should educate them about political realities, but people are walking around wondering why their government isn’t working, and the Washington media has no interest in educating them.
Bash spent a great deal of time trying to “catch” Harris on certain issues.Hydraulic fracturingShe has been consistent in this view since 2020. Republicans are trying to make the issue of Donald Trump’s “shifting of positions” an issue, even though he suddenly became pro-abortion. Voters, by the way, generally don’t care about such things. Politicians are all considered shifters, corrupt, selfish, etc. The ones they attack are those who contradict expectations and assumptions. (That’s why Trump doesn’t seem to suffer from the relentless insanity of the media and the polls.)
Either way, whatever the issue may be,Immigrationclimate change, economy, GazaHarris demonstrated she knows her subject matter well: She spoke clearly, concisely, in plain language, and her questions and answers went far more in-depth than anything Trump has ever said. Until now Bash was quick to ask follow-up questions that Trump never would have gotten (the media should try that sometime). portray her as a frivolous woman Republican anxiety levels about the Sept. 10 debate are especially high for Trump. Use the discussion Reset your campaign and regain momentum.
Of course, there was also this BS:
But to be honest, there wasn’t much of that.
Basch also had this to say: “This happened. What would you say to your voters?” She did it to Waltz military service Original Drunk driving arrestIt’s a nonsensical conceit that she speaks for her constituents. The harsh reality is that all of these issues (and more) are already being litigated, and will continue to be litigated online as long as they matter. For example, Republicans tried to attack Harris as a “DEI embracing” but it didn’t work. This has absolutely nothing to do with the Washington media and everything to do with a lack of support in the places where people actually discuss these things (social media).
This was revealed by Semaphore’s Benji Sahlin yesterday. Tweeted“Here are some examples of things Democrats dislike: [Sen. JD] Vance has had some big interviews and been asked a lot of tough questions about cat ladies, and now that that’s out of the way, he’s had the free reign to promote his campaign message in the media nonstop.” Just because Vance has had a few interviews doesn’t mean we’re not going to keep talking about his “cat ladies” and his strange obsession with the reproductive habits of human females.
President Harris debates Joe Biden’s call The discussion of the Governor’s son, national treasure Gus Waltz, was also excellent.
In the end, it worked out well for Harris, and Waltz remained largely in the background (which was appropriate). she “We don’t have to pin our hopes on Harris and hope she doesn’t do what Biden did. It’s a relief to know we have a very capable candidate out there.”
But this is a bit… boring• There was nothing new here, no major revelations beyond what Harris already knew. We have already communicated all this to our voters. This is hard for the media to internalize, but it’s no longer as important.
If the media wants relevance, they might want to stop claiming “CNN exclusives” about Trump’s reactions to speeches that haven’t even aired yet. This is before the interview airs.
And maybe the media should stop pretending that Trump is far less cognitively impaired than Biden.
Either way, she was interviewed. Now, let’s get back to the business of protecting our democracy.
