Garlic Rice Recipe – This delicious side dish is literally the easiest and tastiest rice you’ll ever make. But you might never want to eat regular rice again! 😜
Garlic rice is super easy to make and super versatile, with the ability to add a variety of herbs, so it’s easy to see why you might never want to go back to regular rice. Adding butter-fried garlic to your rice makes an incredible difference.
For maximum flavor, we recommend cooking it on the stove. If you’re a rice cooker aficionado and are tired of hearing that phrase, we assure you that the stovetop version is just as easy to make. And 1000 times more flavorful than regular rice. However, if you absolutely cannot make it without a rice cooker, you can make garlic rice in a rice cooker.

When to serve garlic rice
What I love most about this rice recipe is how versatile it is. It pairs beautifully with everything from Mexican and Caribbean to Middle Eastern and African cuisine. It’s so flavorful and beautifully combined without overpowering the other flavors, which is a testament to its versatility. 🤩
Recipe Ingredients

- Rice – Long-grain white rice is the best choice for this exact recipe, and honestly, it’s the type that will add the most flavor.
- garlic – The star ingredient is aromatic and flavorful garlic, which can be minced or sliced, depending on your preference.
- butter In this recipe, this rich fat is used to fry the garlic and infuse the rice with garlic flavor.
- soy sauce – This little bit of soy sauce is a secret ingredient, salty and umami, and it also adds a garlicky fried rice flavor to the rice.
- Chicken bone soup – Sure, you can cook rice in water, but adding chicken stock adds some real flavor.
- Spring onion – You can also garnish with chopped spring onions if you like. 💚

- serve Serve with your favorite protein and veggies.

Recipe Variations
- Adjust the texture. If you like your rice a little more al dente, reduce the cooking time by 2 minutes. If you like your rice softer, increase the cooking time by 2 minutes.
- Add vegetablesSometimes when I’m cooking rice I’ll add about 1/3 cup of frozen peas, carrots and corn to the pot – they add beautiful color without overpowering the garlic flavor.
- Use a different type of riceLong-grain white rice works best, but you can make this with almost any type of rice, from jasmine to brown, though you may need to adjust the cooking time.
- Variations of flavour. Lemon Garlic Rice (add the zest of 1 lemon) and Garlic Parmesan Rice (add ¼ cup grated Parmesan when fluffing).
Tips and Tricks
- For a richer flavor, use chicken broth instead of water.
- Adding aromatic plants like bay leaves or thyme to the pot will add extra flavor.
- Once the rice starts to simmer, resist the urge to take a peek or stir. It may be hard, but the secret to perfectly cooked stovetop rice is to let it sit while it slowly absorbs the water. Trust me on this one. 😉
Preliminary steps
Garlic rice can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. It’s also great to make in advance – just add a little broth if it’s too dry when reheating.
You can also make garlic fried rice with leftovers, so make double the amount. 😉

How to serve and store
Serve hot with garlic rice, garnished with chopped spring onions, if desired.
Leftover garlic rice can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, microwave on high for 1-2 minutes or warm in a saucepan over low heat.
