Galaxie 500 recorded three classic LPs with producer and Shimmydisk label boss Kramer over five studio sessions over three years at his Manhattan studio, Noise New York. In addition to these original albums, today, burningand This is our music — Uncollected Noise New York ’88-’90 This set features all of the Galaxie 500 recordings made at Noise New York during that period. It includes restorations of no less than eight previously unheard studio tracks arranged in chronological order, along with previously released but rare material. The set is presented on a double LP, double CD and double tape.
“Opening up this box of tapes was like looking through an old diary or data book,” drummer Damon Krukowski said in a statement. “I had forgotten most of this happened, but knowing a few quick details put me right back in my drum seat. Every song from the Galaxie 500 recording sessions is here.”
“It’s so much fun to hear them discovering their own sound, their own collective voice,” reflects bassist Naomi Yang, the Proustian force of music. Listening to these early recordings, you can hear him figuring out how he wanted to play the bass, finding a place where the note would break through up the neck, where it could be a counterpoint to the vocals. Making the bass his singing voice.”
Singer and guitarist Dean Wareham said: “I understand why some of these songs were put away in storage, but listening to them now is a joy. They sound so alive, like Galaxie 500 playing in the brick-walled room that was Noisy New York.”
Regarding the scope of the set, Silver Current label owner Ethan Miller explained: “This is not just a ‘miscellany’ collection, it’s the untold history of the band told through music. It tells the full untold story of the band as they steadily grew and expanded creatively. This isn’t so much revealing an alternate history of the band, but rather a different perspective of their actual history, seen from the other side of the mirror, from beginning to end.”
