Endemic birds today: Karinago Wren
To honor the island’s indigenous people, Karinago, please say hello to Karinagoren, the Dominican latest officially recognized first-class bird, named in 2024. It was previously considered a subspecies of House Wren, Troglodytes Martinicensis rufescens It is now celebrated as a distinct species of its own. It acknowledges new research that emphasizes its own genetics, songs and behavior.
Locals are lovingly calling it syòl, sinyòl, wòsinyòl, èsiyòl, òsiyòland Madame Techchen. The surname “Madam Tétchyen” (or “Mrs. Boa Constrictor”) comes from local folklore. Wren is a native boa, or Tétchyenlike a natural husband-wife pair, often found. Find Kalina Gorne, and you may be near the Boa!
Previously discovered in Guadeloupe and Martinique, Kalinagoren is stained from both islands, possibly due to habitat loss and the effects of invasive predators. This will make Dominica a very important island for the last remaining base and its continued survival.
You can find Kalinagoren, but you tend to avoid the town, although Dominican moist and dry forests, country scenery, and even close to homes. The ability to adapt to the human environment (including nesting in grooves and concrete blocks) is impressive and could help recover after Hurricane Maria in 2017.
Its diet even contains small lizards such as insects and young anoles, and often fly low across the forest floor during foraging. Its powerful voice makes it easier to hear than you see it!
Kalinago wren is still being studied, but it is believed that there will be two breeding seasons from May to August to December. However, some nesting activities have been reported from February to April, suggesting that there may be three breeding cycles per year. The nest is built in a tree cavity of twigs, and birds exhibit clever adaptability using human structures such as trenches and concrete blocks. The clutch usually contains 2-6 whitish eggs with reddish brown spots.
Although its precise population size and conservation status have not yet been formally assessed, Kalinagoren appears to be widespread and stable. Still, as a single island endemic, it is vulnerable to habitat loss and natural disasters, especially hurricanes. This will become a priority for surveillance, research and conservation efforts. Find out more about this kind of range, photos, phones and more. Great news!
