‘Listen to advice from authorities’: NWS warns of dangerous storm surge

Dr. Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center, said a dangerous storm surge is expected as Tropical Storm Debby approaches Florida.

The storm will likely make landfall on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane.

“If you live in a storm surge evacuation zone in this part of Florida’s Big Bend coast, listen to whatever advice your local authorities give you,” Brennan warned. “If you are asked to evacuate, know where to go and how to get there. Remember, in many cases, you only need to drive a few dozen miles inland to escape the danger areas of a storm surge evacuation zone.”

“Not only will there be an increased risk of precipitation, but also increased potential for storm surge and strong winds,” Brennan said of the weakening storm.
