For the first time, wild chimpanzees were caught up in sharing films that share fermented fruits. This footage comes from Qantanhaz National Park in Guinea-Bissau, West African countries. There, camera traps recorded chimpanzees eating fermented breadfruit on 10 separate occasions.
Fruit tests have shown that it is at most equivalent to 0.61% alcohol by volume, much more powerful than light beer, but when chimpanzees eat such a large amount of fruit, scientists say small amounts can start to be added.
Discoveries detailed in the journal Current Biologyraises the prospect that chimpanzees are actively seeking alcohol and sharing it. Perhaps to strengthen social ties, just like humans.
“Chimpanzees don’t share food all the time, so this behavior may be important in fermented fruits,” said Kimberly Hocking, a research co-author at the University of Exeter. “If so, it suggests that the human tradition of feasts may have its origins deeply in our evolutionary history.”

Scientists working in the park rely on cameras, microphones and other tools to maintain distance in order to maintain healthy fear of humans in chimpanzees.
