Federal authorities are investigating whether messages posted on social media by former FBI director James Comey were intended to be a threat to President Donald Trump.
Fired by Trump in his first semester, Comey posted an image on Instagram on Thursday for sand shell wood spelling out the number “8647.”
The number “86” is often used to refer to removing something that includes an individual. Trump is the 47th (and 45th) US President.
The message accompanied by the image of “8647” was a message captioning a post saying, “My cool shell formation on my beach walk…”
Current FBI Director Kash Patel responded with an X late Thursday.
“I know of a recent social media post by former FBI director James Comey directed at President Trump,” Patel posted. “We are in touch with the Secret Service [Secret Service] director [Sean] Karan. The primary jurisdiction lies in the SS on these issues, and the FBI provides all the necessary support. ”

Comey later deleted the image and posted a message on Instagram. “I have posted some photos of the shells I saw on the beach walk before, and I thought this was a political message, and I never linked those numbers to violence.
Trump faced two assassination attempts last year during the November presidential election phase. At a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July, snipers were fired at Trump from a nearby roof, grazing his ears and killing audiences.
Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem said Secret Service and DHS are investigating.

Anthony Grielmi, Secret Service’s Director of Communications, confirmed that the agency was aware of Comey’s post.
“The Secret Service is actively investigating what we can consider as a potential threat to our parents,” he said in a statement. “We are aware of social media posts by former FBI directors and take this kind of rhetoric very seriously.”
Grielmi said the secret service had not commented on the issue of protection information.
Comey oversaw an investigation into the current denied claims that Trump conspired with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election.
