The Chicago Fire loaned forward Georgios Kousias to Swiss club FC Lugano on Friday.
The one-year loan begins on January 1 and includes an option to permanently transfer at the end of the contract.
Koushias, 20, played in 57 MLS games (18 starts) with the Fire from 2023 to 2024, recording five goals and three assists.
“We are excited to watch Georgios continue his development with our partners at FC Lugano,” Fire coach Gregg Berhalter said. “He has expressed a desire to return to Europe and this move gives him the opportunity to continue developing in a highly competitive league. We also look forward to building a strong squad for the 2025 season. As we work on this, we will also have more flexibility with our roster.”
The loan will allow Chicago to acquire the U-22 initiative and national team quota, and Chicago retains the right to recall the Greek national team player at any time.
FC Lugano, which competes in the Swiss Super League, was acquired by Fire owner Joe Mansueto in 2021.
