Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula braced for the prospect of hurricane Beryl, currently a Category 2 storm, making landfall early Friday with winds of up to 110 mph and a dangerous storm surge.
The region can expect life-threatening winds, a storm surge of up to 5 feet and up to 10 inches of rainfall, said Michael Brennan, director of the National Hurricane Center. Said Thursday afternoon.
Hurricane Beryl is expected to bring dangerous rip currents to the Gulf Coast over the weekend and is likely to hit South Texas on Monday, according to a forecast from the National Weather Service.
“We urge all residents, especially in South Texas, to continue to monitor weather forecast updates,” Brennan said.
Hurricane Beryl claimed at least 10 lives. Reuters Two of the dead – from St. George, Grenada, and Hanover, Jamaica – were reportedly killed when hurricane-force winds caused a tree to fall on their home.
Hurricane Beryl devastated Jamaica on Wednesday, cutting power to 400,000 people and destroying buildings. The storm is passing but rains and flash floods remain a danger to the island.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said Grenada also suffered “unimaginable” damage after the storm passed through on Monday, with 98 percent of buildings damaged or destroyed.
