explanation: Nottingham Contemporary is pleased to present the first major exhibition of artist Daniel Lind Ramos (b. 1953, Puerto Rico) at its European facility.Green Guardian(2024).
Lind-Ramos lives and works in LoÃza, a coastal town on the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico. The town is a hub of West African cultural traditions that is alive and lived by the resident “Aphrodes Andentes,” a descendant of former enslaved people who founded Roy in the 16th century. Lind-Ramos spends much of his life there, and is passed down for generations, immersed in stories, history, traditions and culture.
The power of memory and storytelling is at the heart of Lindra Moss’ work. He creates an inspiring collection of sculptures that reflect Puerto Rican historical and contemporary experiences, infusing his Afro-sensitive historical storytelling tradition, captivating reflections on nutrition and community revitalization. Totemic’s sculptures incorporate objects that are washed down on local beaches in their hometown of LoÃza, or presented by friends, family and community members. Items such as kayaking, plant materials, burlap bags, boots, and mattress springs all hint at individually fragmented stories, but when combined, evoke the intertwining of the artist’s home, community, customs, land, colonial history and global environmental disasters.
The five works, presented in two large galleries at Nottingham Contemporary, are proud of local farming, fishing and culinary habits, reflecting on the impact of ongoing ecological disasters and the global events, such as the Covid-19 pandemic.
