President Trump I was interviewed Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic:
Trump: I think one of the things I’ve been most successful is diplomatic relations.
Goldberg: I don’t think Canadians agree.
Trump: Well, Canadian. This is the problem I have in Canada. We subsidize the $200 billion adjustments per year. And we don’t need their gasoline. We don’t need their oil. We don’t need their wood. It doesn’t require any type of energy. You don’t need anything they have. I say it will be a great 51st state. I love other countries. I love Canada. I have great friends. Wayne Gretzky is my friend. I mean, I have some great friends. I told Wayne, “I’m going to give you a pass, Wayne.” I don’t want to ruin his reputation in Canada. I said, “Pretend you don’t know me.” But they are wonderful people.
You know, they do 95% of their business with us. If they are states, there are no tariffs. They have a lower tax. We must protect them militarily.
Goldberg: Do you seriously want them to become a nation?
Trump: I think it’s great.
