England have announced their squad to take on the West Indies in the first match of the three-match series, with Surrey players Gus Atkinson and Jamie Smith both making their debuts in James Anderson’s retirement Test match at Lord’s.
Of the 14 players selected for the first Test, Dan Lawrence, Dillon Pennington and Matthew Potts are the ones who will be absent, with Atkinson, Chris Woakes and Anderson given preference over the latter two in the seamer position for the final Test.
It will be Woakes’ first Test match for the national team since being named Man of the Series in last summer’s Ashes. The all-rounder is taking a break from cricket following the death of his father earlier this year.
Somerset off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who was on loan to Worcestershire, will play his first Test match for England after making his debut for India earlier this year.
Smith, as expected, will make his Test debut as wicketkeeper, replacing Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes, who are potential replacements in the squad.
