Aron, co-founder and CEO of Frances Valentine, was co-created with Spade before the designer passed away at. 55 years old in June 2018shared top fashion advice she and Spade exchanged.
“Our personal styles were always out of alignment, especially when we first met. Katie has a much more traditional and preppy style, mine is more trend-driven and is always trying to emulate the latest looks in magazines,” admits Aron.
The duo was initially attracted to a variety of trends, but ultimately they combined a unique sense of fashion to create timeless outfits.
“It was fun to learn from each other. …We really found that vintage is the most inspirational and really tied to vintage shopping and the search for treasures we are grateful for and can afford,” she spills.
Spade’s favorite is “Katie loved colorful, joy-splitting pieces, whether vintage or new. She always cherished works of excellent designs and excellent quality.”
“I was imagining the story behind each piece and thinking about the woman who owned it,” adds Aron.
Icons in these styles included stars like Mary Tyler Moorelike Ali McGraw, Kathryn Hepburn, Jackie Onassis, a-listers Gwyneth Paltrow, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Mindy Kalingand Taylor Swift It was discovered in their designs.
“We loved it when celebrities chose to carry our bags, but for us, it was all women’s bags.
And the original Kate Spade wallet from the 1990s holds up to today.
“One of my biggest advice for young people trying to find their style is to start with vintage… a fun and colorful handbag, summer basket bag, kitten heels, Mary Jane flats, and jewelry bags for outfits for layers,” she suggests.
What can’t be done wrong? “A crisp white shirt, or ten black cigarette pants — or three — a go-to swing coat, trench or jacket, a fun print or colour, a perfect pair of jeans, and a great dress that will make you feel like a million dollars.”
